Original company was founded in 1933 by J.D. Oaks and operated as a family contracting business under the name of Oaks Precast Industries in Guelph, Ontario.
Originally manufactured concrete brick and block for the local renovation market.
In the 1960’s Oaks introduced the “60 minute manhole”. This was a system of installing precast manhole sections designed to be backfilled immediately after construction.
In May of 1972 Oaks Precast was purchased by Standard Industries (later to be known as Lafarge) from the Oaks family.
In the late 1970’s, Oaks refined a patented system called moduloc.
This product eliminated the need for coning sections used to bring a manhole or catch basin to final road grade.
In 1981 Oaks diversified into a new market - the concrete paving stone and retaining wall products. Production for these lines began at the Markham, Ontario plant.
In 1983 Oaks supplied their first large municipal job in North Bay, Ontario. Five city blocks (1 kilometre) of the downtown core were paved with concrete interlocking pavers - over 150,000 sq.ft. This revitalization project spanned six months of 1983 and kept the Markham plant at full paver capacity.
Pavers were produced at our London, Ontario facility (shared with Concrete Pipe Company) during the years 1985 to 1989. This plant was instrumental in the development of the US market in Michigan. We now warehouse pavers and wall product at a depot in London.
As the years progressed, so did the demands on the Markham and London plants. In 1989 the Milton, Ontario plant was built and Wixom, Michigan followed shortly after in 1991.
The Markham plant production was solely dedicated to paver production in 1993.
In January of 1994 Oaks was involved in the restructuring of Lafarge.
The precast portion of the business united with Concrete Pipe Company to become Lafarge Pipe and Precast and the paving stone and retaining wall products became Lafarge Interlocking Pavers and Retaining Walls. We operated as part of the Central division known as the Concrete Products group.
As the business continued to expand state side a depot was opened in Wilder, Kentucky in April 2001.
With a focus directed at their core products, Lafarge sold the Pavers and Walls business unit to Brampton Brick Limited in May 2002.
With a new owner came a new but familiar company name, Oaks Concrete Products.
Shortly after the change in ownership, the new Design Centre and show gardens opened at our Markham facility in September 2002.
In August 2003 Oaks announced the opening of a new depot in Bartlett, Illinois.
